Tobacco and health

The major public health problems among Finns are cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, home and leisure accident injuries, and fractures.

High cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease CHD rates as well as lung cancer rates among men have dropped, as less Finnish men smoke. Rising smoking by women over the last 30 years has not been mirrored by a parallel increase on these diseases, due to the other factors that prompt the onset of the diseases.

Approximately 400 000 Finns suffer from chronic bronchitis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
