Tobacco Industry strategies in Finland

Heikki Hiilamo Academic dissertation. The fear of Losing out - 1975-2001. Tobacco Industry strategies in Finland. 2007.

The material is primarily based on tobacco industry internal documents. The study focused on tobacco control measures in Finland and product liability litigation against the tobacco companies from 1988 to 2001.

Finland has been of particular interest to tobacco companies because of  the country´s long experience with tobacco legislation. The documents show that the tobacco industry has systematically sought to steer discussion away from the harmful effects of smoking and to prevent legislation. In practice, the tobacco companies attempted to hide behind apparently objective and independent scientists, research results and actors in the public debate.

The study offers first hand information on the tobacco industry strategies and their implementation.
