Smoke-free hospitals in Finland
|
Smoke-free hospitals in FinlandHospital districts have one after another become smoke-free in Finland; Middle-Ostrobothnia already in 1989 and South-Karelia in 1995. In the beginning of 2008 all districts were smoke-free.
Health Promoting Hospitals in Finland- association started the smoke-free hospitals- project in 2004, during when only three smoke-free hospital districts existed. The association prepared a policy plan to support and effectuate the project as soon as possible. With the help of this policy plan each district has been able to independently carry out the realization.
The objective of the smoke-free hospitals- project is to protect the staff and the patients, but also to promote smoke-free environment plans. Smoke-free hospitals aim to set out an example for other societies. The restrictions on smoking include the ban on smoking in the hospital area or during working hours. For patients who are unable to quit smoking have been arranged a designated area outdoors. The staff is not to accompany the patients there. In the psychiatric unit the ban on smoking is recommended but not compulsory.
Health Promoting Hospitals in Finland- association wants to underline the importance of including health promotion to the Finnish hospital culture. The association started in 2001. Health promoting hospitals in Finland also works together with Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities, Stakes, Finnish Centre for Health Promotion, Cancer Society of Finland and Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
Health promoting hospitals in Finland is also a part of the international WHO network. Finland is a member of The European Network for Smoke-free Hospitals (ENSH). The coordinator in Finland for ENSH action is Reetta-Maija Luhta (reetta-maija.luhta@epshp.fi ).
